Reports to: Assistant Principal, Executive Director, PYP Program Coordinator, Chinese Language Coordinator, Director of Teacher and Learning and Learning Support Coordinator
Position Overview: The Substitute Teacher carries out regular teacher’s lesson plans while the regular teacher is absent. During a prolonged absence of the regular teacher, the Substitute Teacher is responsible for performing all essential functions identified in the absent teacher’s job description.
Essential Responsibilities:
Performs the absent teacher’s class plans. Duties may include:
Follow the absent teacher’s written lesson plans. Consult with the Assistant Principal and/or appropriate personnel to resolve questions and/or concerns.
Teach scheduled classes. Communicate with the absent teacher in regards to special situations or problems encountered.
Implement effective classroom management procedures. Maintain high standards and uphold the student code of conduct.
Vary instructional techniques to address individual learning styles and stimulate student interest.
Develop and maintain a positive learning environment. Help parents understand academic and behavioral objectives.
Ensure student/staff safety. Do not leave students unsupervised.
Supervise non-classroom duties as assigned.
Watch for student behavior that may indicate a problem, e.g. profanity, bullying, distress, etc. Intervene and/or report concerns to school administration. Consult with parents if needed.
Work cooperatively with other teachers.
Comply with all school procedures and schedules.
Perform other specific job related duties as requested.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
Teaching experience in an elementary school setting is preferred.
Appreciation, experience, and understanding of Chinese culture.
Native level Mandarin Chinese proficiency is required for substitute teachers in Chinese classrooms.
Excellent verbal and writing communication skills and strong motivational skills.
